Reservoir UltraViolet Virtual Machine

Reservoir's UltraViolet Virtual Machine Development Kit offers a robust, fully-featured platform with the opportunity for increased performance. UltraViolet is a version of the Sun OpenJDK implementation of Java Platform, Standard Edition, ported to MIPS.

UltraViolet for MIPS

  • Available with and without Reservoir support

The UltraViolet Virtual Machine is available in source form under the GPL Version 2 license.

UltraViolet Features

UltraViolet is built on OpenJDK, an open-source version of Sun's industry-leading HotSpot Java Virtual Machine. Reservoir has ported the interpreter portion of OpenJDK to MIPS, and is available to implement customized client, server, or tiered compiler packages for specific platforms, or ports to entirely new architectures.

  • UltraViolet implements the fast template-based interpreter, rather than using the generic platform-independent interpreter
  • UltraViolet targets MIPS64 r1, and can be easily customized to other MIPS variants

Unlike other MIPS virtual machines, the UltraViolet platform supports state of the art runtime optimizations and a complete set of Standard Edition libraries for advanced applications. OpenJDK features include:

  • Staged intepretation and compilation, for fast startup as well as high performance over longer runs
  • Built-in multicore support
  • Full set of Standard Edition libraries
  • Highly efficient parallel garbage collection
  • Platform support for dynamic optimization of actively executing code
  • Debugging and profiling interfaces
